Jones is a child born to a motherless family with five children in poverty and hardship as a youngster, experienced an incredibly difficult childhood. Jones received the Gatorade Iowa Track and Field Athlete of the Year Award in high school. She was an active member of the school orchestra, as cellist. Since her college days, Jones proved to be one of the top hurdlers. At the 2002 NCAA Track and Field Championships in 2002, Jones took home the 100-meter hurdles. Also, she participated on the team that finished second in the 100-meters relay. Jones has won indoor hurdles at NCAA championships in 2003 as well as 2004. Jones was a professional athlete in 2005 after she completed her degree. She began to train for a successful track career. Jones was the winner of Torino Memorial in 2005, in addition to Ostrava and Heusden races the following year.

Brandt relocated out of Cape Town South Africa to Auckland New Zealand at the end of her teens. Brandt's talent was recognized in Auckland by local casting director Brandt.
